Type of Restaurant



1. Fast Food Restaurant/ Quick-Service Restaurant


Characteristics:
  • Many precook or partially cook food.
  • Goal is to serve maximum number of customers in a minimum amount of time.
  • Food is paid for before service.
  • Limited menus
Advantages:
  • Save money because fast food tends to be cheaper than the alternatives.
  • Save time as there is very low or no waiting time for food to be served.
  • There are many healthy fast food options now so no need to eat fat-filled burgers and fries.

Disadvantages: 
  • Lower quality food that are usually caused by a large-scale production process.
  • More fattening foods that are mainly caused by the lower quality food sources.

2. Franchise Restaurant


Characteristic:
  • Fewer Risks
    • marketing and management supports are available.
    • restaurants format has been tested in the marketplace.
  • Several requirements
    • franchising and royalty fees, advertising royalty, and substantial personal net worth.


Advantages: 
  • A well established name
  • Financing 
  • Training and Support

Disadvantages:
  • High employee turnover rate
  • Price sensitive
  • Franchise Costs

3. Fine Dining Restaurant


Characteristics:
  • Expensive and leisurely
  • Very low table turnover
  • Restaurants are small
  • Customer: special occasions and business
Advantages:
  • Elegant and entertaining
  • Only one waiter is required
  • Much of the profits come from wine

Disadvantages:
  • Price is expensive
  • Cannot fits many customers
  • High labor costs due to the necessity of highly experienced employees.

Characteristics:
  • Casual restaurant without table service.
  • Serve coffee and other beverages.
  • Suitable for businesses, family or friends for gathering place.
Advantages:
  • Relax and socialize

  • Nice atmosphere and environment

Disadvantages:
  • Limited selection of cold foods
  • No have main dishes
  • No table service

Characteristics:
  • Serving ready-cooked food arranged behind a food serving counter.
  • Customers take the food that they desire as they walk along.
  • There are often stations where customers order food and wait while it is prepared.

Advantages:
  • Many food selection
  • Price is cheaper
  • Food arranged

Disadvantages:
  • There is little or no table service
  • Ready-cooked food will turn cold food.

Characteristics:
  • Built around emphasizing fun and fantasy
  • Comparatively short life cycle
  • Do well outside major tourist attractions
  • Costs area high
Advantages:
  • Design a new theme concept restaurant
  • Attract local people and tourists to visit
Disadvantages:
  • High costs for decoration and design
  • Short life cycle compared to others type of restaurant
  • Most of the profits come from merchandise not food sales

7.  Chef-Owned Restaurant


Characteristic: 
  • Part of American tradition of family restaurants
  • Publicity is key in gaining attention
  • Chef-owner should have a good backup person
    • Share in management, food preparation and marketing
Advantages:
  • Having an experienced, highly motivated person in charge.
  • Name often already known and synonymous with great food.
  • Can be very profitable.

Disadvantages:
  • Chefs often less knowledgeable about "the numbers".
  • Can often make more money working as a chef in a name restaurant.
  • Location and other factors are just as important for success as food preparation and presentation.

8. Centralized Home Delivery Restaurants


Characteristics:
  • Reduce costs of order-taking, food preparation and accounting.
  • Home delivery centers verify and process credit card information.
  • Can be done at any location connected to the internet, locally or internationally.

  • Health benefits
  • Very convenient
Disadvantages:
  • Price
  • Limited menu

  • Making exploration comfortable

Disadvantages:

  • Price may expensive
  • Ingredients are import from other country.
  • Not every customer like to eat ethnic food
    • Eg.: If Mexican restaurant operate in Penang, some of customer like           Mexican food some do not accept.

Characteristics:
  • Serve a variety different kinds of food.
    • More than 10 types of foods
  • Called as an all-you-can-eat restaurant.
Advantages:

  • Implements the cross strategy
  • The cooks do not need to cook every new order comes in.
Disadvantages:
  • Provide large meal
  • Will lose if it turns out that there are not many customers coming.

Characteristics:

  • It is a large vehicle equipped to cook and sell food.
  • Along with portable food booths and food carts, are on the front line of the street food industry.
Advantages:

  • It has the ability to simply move to new locations.
  • It have the ability to generate revenue in a number of different ways.
  • It will park near night time entertainment venue in order to generate more substantial revenue.
Disadvantages:
  • Labor and fuel costs are a significant part of the overhead.
  • Unique health risks compared to regular land-based restaurants when it comes to food safety and the prevention of food-borne illness.

Characteristics:
  • Provided by a business that allows customers to purchase products without leaving their cars.
  • Orders are generally placed using a microphone and picked up in person at the window.
  • Customer will receive their food from an attendant when it is ready to be served.

  • Customer do not need park their car at car park, straight go to drive-through order and picked up their dishes.
  • Save time
Disadvantages:
  • Attendant speak not so clearly.
  • Easily take wrong order

14. Bakery


Characteristics:
  • Is an establishment that produces and sells the bread, cakes, sandwich and so on.
  • Some bakeries are serving coffee and tea to customers who wish to consume the baked goods on the premises.
  • Some bakeries provide services for special occasions such as wedding, birthday parties, anniversaries or even business events.
Advantages:
  • Mainly quick-service establishment
  • Variety of setting, products and ambiance
  • Many bake off goods that are prepared elsewhere or do final proofing after receiving goods.
Disadvantages:
  • Waste the bread if couldn't sell it
  • Cannot bake too many bread to sell, need estimate the quantity of bread.
